London’s biggest international airport, Heathrow Airport has awarded Sensor Dynamics to design and install a brand new Taxi Management System. As recorded in 2023, Heathrow Airport averages 216,000 passengers daily.
Taxi Ranks in the recent years have had peak wait times reaching up to 10 – 15 minutes and additionally, there has been an overflow of Taxis due to a decrease in demand for the service. After a long flight, the last thing that a passenger wants to do is wait for a Taxi to be available which is the reason the demand for Taxis has been negatively affected in the first place.
With such a large volume of passengers flying in and out of the Airport, Sensor Dynamics’ system for managing the Taxi Rank aims to ensure that Taxis are able to pick up and transport customers to their destinations effectively.
The expected outcome from this system would revitalise the demand for Taxi Services which could distribute the passengers requiring transport volume with precision.
Arriving passengers will experience shorter wait times for a ride back home and the demand for Taxi Services will resurface providing more work for Cab Drivers. With this in place, the Taxi Industry could stay afloat despite the new rise of Rideshare Apps that have been standardised across airports globally.
Leveraging technological advancements in the last three years, Sensor Dynamics will implement an upgraded solution for the Taxi Rank Management system. This solution encompasses a significant software upgrade from the Taxi Management Systems installed in Australian Airports.
In the past, an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) Taxi Rank System would integrate to other systems with the vehicle plate data that is collected.
Using Sensor Dynamics LPR, the new Taxi Rank Management System will:
1. Capture, classify and store the Taxi Vehicle Data based on:
2. It will attach the Taxi Queue Ranking to the vehicle.
3. The system will manage the Taxi Ranking of the vehicle, based on the recorded journeys of that particular Taxi at the airport.
The implementation of this solution will be designed and installed by Sensor Dynamics and is expected to reduce wait times and ensure that passengers are able to be on their way to their destination as soon as possible once exiting the Airport Terminal Gates.
Beyond improving wait times at airports, this new system has the potential to set the standard for taxi management globally, breathing new opportunities into the taxi industry and potentially influencing other industries into implementing effective passenger transportation into their business.
